Understanding UTIs & Kidney Infections
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are very common. They usually affect the bladder (cystitis) but can ascend to the kidneys, causing pyelonephritis, which is more serious. Most UTIs are caused by bacteria (like E. coli). Kidney infections often occur when a bladder infection goes untreated or in people with urinary blockages. Risk factors include female anatomy, catheter use, diabetes and structural abnormalities. Untreated pyelonephritis can lead to kidney damage or bloodstream infection (sepsis), so prompt treatment is important.
When To See a Doctor
You should consult a doctor if you experience symptoms any of:
Bladder (lower UTI) symptomsBurning pain when urinating, frequent urge to urinate, urgency, and sometimes lower abdominal pressure or cramping. Urine may look cloudy, strong-smelling or have blood.
-
Kidney (upper UTI) symptomsHigh fever, chills, nausea or vomiting, and pain in the side or back (flank pain). Sometimes confusion or fatigue can occur in severe cases.

Anyone with painful urination and fever should get checked. In infants or elderly, fever alone may be a clue to a UTI.
Treatment At Shlok Infectious Diseases Clinic
We quickly assess urinary infections with a urine test (dipstick and microscopy) and urine culture to identify the bacteria. For a simple bladder infection, oral antibiotics (based on local resistance patterns) often clear it. For kidney infections or complicated UTIs, we may start IV antibiotics and hospitalization as needed.
We also check for predisposing factors – for example, we ensure catheters are managed properly and advise diabetic patients on blood sugar control. If infections recur frequently, we investigate for stones or anatomical issues. Education is part of care: we instruct on hydration, proper hygiene, and in women possibly preventive measures (post-coital voiding, etc.). Our goal is complete cure with minimal antibiotic use, following CDC guidance on UTI management.
