Understanding Chronic or Viral Fever
Fever is the body’s natural response to infection. Most fevers are short-lived and easily managed, but persistent or recurrent fevers (lasting days or weeks) warrant expert evaluation. Causes include viral illnesses (influenza, dengue, COVID-19, etc.) and other infections (like tuberculosis, typhoid or malaria). Chronic fever may hide a serious infection or other condition.
Our goal is to find the exact cause of the fever – whether viral, bacterial or parasitic – using a combination of history, exams, blood tests and imaging. Early identification is crucial to preventing complications and guiding the right therapy.
When To See a Doctor
You should consult a doctor if you experience symptoms any of:
High or prolonged fever body temperature ≥101°F that persists for several days or weeks without clear improvement.
-
Severe or unusual symptoms chills, night sweats, or feeling extremely weak/fatigued along with fever.

Respiratory or systemic signs cough, difficulty breathing, chest pain, or shortness of breath with fever (could indicate pneumonia or influenza)
-
Neurological or gastrointestinal signs headache, stiff neck, confusion, persistent vomiting, abdominal pain or rash with fever (could signal severe infection like meningitis or dengue)

Warning signs of dehydration or bleeding inability to keep fluids down, dark urine, unusual bleeding or bruising
Treatment At Shlok Infectious Diseases Clinic
We perform comprehensive diagnostic work-ups to identify the cause of chronic or viral fever. This may include specialized blood tests (CBC, cultures, viral serologies, PCR for viruses), imaging studies, and targeted screening for specific diseases (e.g. tuberculosis or malaria tests). Once identified, we provide supportive care and targeted treatments. For viral causes, we may prescribe antivirals or symptom relief (fluids, antipyretics) and closely monitor recovery. For persistent fevers of unknown origin, our ID specialist coordinates with labs to rule out hidden infections and then treats accordingly. We also advise on preventive measures (like vaccines or mosquito control) to avoid viral illnesses. Throughout recovery, our clinic emphasizes patient education and follow-up to ensure complete resolution.
