Antibiotic stewardship refers to expert review of antibiotic use to ensure that each patient gets the right drug, dose and duration. The goal is to treat infections effectively and minimize side effects and resistance.
Overuse or misuse of antibiotics is a major public health issue. In fact, CDC studies show that about 30% of hospital antibiotics are unnecessary or suboptimal. Optimizing antibiotic use improves cure rates and reduces harms like drug side effects, Clostridioides difficile infections, and resistant bacteria.
When To See a Doctor
You may benefit from a stewardship consultation if:
You have an infection not responding to initial antibiotics.

A culture shows a drug-resistant organism (MRSA, MDR-TB, etc.).
You have allergies limiting antibiotic choices.

You have risk factors for resistance (recent hospital stay, dialysis, etc.).
You are on prolonged antibiotics (e.g. more than a week) without clear guidance.
