Understanding Post-Surgical (Surgical Site) Infections
Any surgery, even with ideal sterile precautions, carries a risk of infection at the surgical site. These are called surgical site infections (SSIs). They can be superficial (skin layers) or deep (involving muscle, bone or implanted hardware). Common bacteria (Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Pseudomonas) often cause SSIs.
Some infections occur early (days after surgery) while others may appear weeks later. Risk factors include lengthy operations, underlying diseases (diabetes, obesity), or surgeries on contaminated tissues.
When To See a Doctor
Look for any of the following around the surgical wound:
Local signs of infectionRedness, warmth, pain or tenderness, and swelling at the incision site.
-
Wound changesOpening of the incision, pus or cloudy drainage from the wound.

Systemic signs Fever, chills or malaise even if the wound looks mild.
-
Delayed healingIf the site is not improving or is breaking down.

Even minor redness or drainage should be checked, as SSIs can worsen quickly.
Treatment At Shlok Infectious Diseases Clinic
We promptly assess any suspected post-surgical infection. Our approach includes wound cultures (to identify the germ) and labs, plus imaging (ultrasound/CT) if an abscess is suspected. Based on the findings, we initiate targeted antibiotic therapy – often starting broad and then narrowing once culture results are back. According to Johns Hopkins guidelines, most SSIs can be treated successfully with antibiotics, but some cases require drainage or additional surgery.
Dr. Suthar works closely with your surgeon to coordinate care. We also advise on wound care and prevention: for example, optimizing blood sugar in diabetics or ensuring proper nutrition for healing. Throughout, we emphasize antibiotic stewardship – using the safest, shortest effective course to cure the infection while preventing resistance.
