Understanding Hepatitis B & C
Hepatitis B and C are viruses that infect the liver and can cause both short-term (acute) or long-term (chronic) disease. Both are spread by blood or body fluids (through unprotected sex, needle sharing, transfusions, etc.). Many people are unaware they have hepatitis because early symptoms can be mild or absent. However, chronic infection can lead to serious liver damage: cirrhosis or even liver cancer.
The good news is that effective treatments exist. Hepatitis B is preventable by vaccine, and chronic hepatitis C can now be cured in most patients with direct-acting antiviral (DAA) drugs. Our clinic specializes in identifying these infections early and managing treatment so that patients recover liver health.
When To See a Doctor
Because liver disease can be silent, watch for signs like:
General ill feelingFatigue, loss of appetite and nausea
-
Dark urine or pale (clay-colored) stools.

Jaundiceyellowing of the skin or eyes.
-
Abdominal discomfortEspecially in the right upper belly.

Low-grade fever or joint pain.
For Hepatitis C, many patients have no symptoms for years, so routine screening (blood test) is advised. Any unexplained liver test abnormalities or risk factors (IV drug use, transfusion before 1992, etc.) should prompt evaluation.
Treatment At Shlok Infectious Diseases Clinic
We offer full diagnostics and treatment for hepatitis B and C. For diagnosis, we order appropriate blood tests (viral antigen/antibody tests, liver enzymes, and viral load). If infection is confirmed, we tailor the therapy:
Hepatitis B: Oral antivirals (like tenofovir or entecavir) to suppress the virus and protect the liver. Treatment can often be lifelong if the virus cannot be cleared. We monitor liver function and viral levels to adjust therapy.
Hepatitis C: We prescribe the latest DAAs, which in most cases completely cure the infection within 8–12 weeks. We also evaluate liver fibrosis (with imaging or FibroScan) to assess any damage.
Throughout treatment, we manage side effects and counsel on lifestyle (e.g. avoiding alcohol, vaccinating against hepatitis A). Close follow-up ensures successful cure or control. We also coordinate care for any complications (e.g. referring for liver cancer screening if cirrhosis is present).
