Understanding Pneumonia
Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs causing inflammation of the air sacs (alveoli). It can be causedby bacteria, viruses or fungi. Community-acquired pneumonia often starts outside hospitals (like influenza or pneumococcus), while hospital-acquired or ventilator-associated pneumonia affects bedridden or ventilated patients. Pneumonia can range from mild to life-threatening, especially in the very young, elderly or those in intensive care.
In ICUs, ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and aspiration pneumonia are common issues. Management involves prompt antibiotics (if bacterial) and supportive care for breathing.
When To See a Doctor
You should consult a doctor if you experience symptoms any of:
RespiratoryPersistent cough (possibly producing yellow/green or bloody sputum), rapid or troubled breathing, and chest pain that worsens with breathing or coughing.
-
SystemicHigh fever or chills, sweating, malaise and loss of appetite or fatigue.

Other Confusion or changes in mental status (especially in older patients).
In ventilated ICU patients, watch for changes like new fever or increased respiratory secretions. Any sign of breathing difficulty or altered breathing rate needs urgent attention.
Treatment At Shlok Infectious Diseases Clinic
We treat pneumonia according to the latest guidelines. Diagnosis is confirmed with chest X-rays and possibly sputum cultures. If bacterial pneumonia is suspected, we start appropriate antibiotics immediately. If viral (like influenza or COVID-19), we may use antivirals or supportive treatments. In severe cases (e.g. ICU patients), we coordinate care with respiratory therapists and critical care teams.
For resistant organisms or complicated cases (empyema, abscess), we consider broaderspectrum antibiotics and involve surgeons for drainage if needed. Our clinic emphasizes infection prevention too: advising on pneumonia vaccines and hospital infection control. By monitoring oxygen levels and vitals closely, we ensure safe recovery and catch any complications early.
