Understanding HIV / AIDS Management
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the immune system, specifically the cells that fight infection. If left untreated, HIV can progress to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), the most advanced stage of infection. There is currently no cure for HIV, but with proper lifelong treatment (antiretroviral therapy, or ART), people can live long, healthy lives.
Modern ART dramatically lowers the amount of virus in the blood (viral load), allowing the immune system to recover. Importantly, treated HIV no longer spreads to others (“undetectable = untransmittable”). Our clinic provides comprehensive HIV care, including the latest medications, monitoring, and support to manage this chronic condition.
When To See a Doctor
Early HIV infection often causes flu-like symptoms 2–4 weeks after exposure – such as fever, headache, fatigue, rash, sore throat or swollen lymph glands. However, these symptoms are mild and easily mistaken for a cold, so HIV can go unnoticed. Over time, if untreated, HIV leads to more severe symptoms:
Chronic fever, weight loss or night sweatsPersistent infection
-
Frequent infections or unusual illnessesSuch as persistent thrush (white mouth patches), recurrent pneumonia or TB.

Neurological signsConfusion, memory loss or nerve damage (in advanced AIDS).
Any individual with risk factors (unprotected sex, needle use, etc.) or these symptoms should get tested. The only way to know is with an HIV test – we offer confidential testing at our clinic.
Treatment At Shlok Infectious Diseases Clinic
We provide comprehensive HIV management. This includes: testing and counseling; starting and monitoring ART (according to national and WHO guidelines); and routine follow-up (measuring CD4 count and viral load). If an HIV-positive patient develops any related infection (TB, hepatitis, pneumonia, etc.), we manage that as well. Prevention of opportunistic infections is key: we prescribe vaccines or prophylactic antibiotics as needed.
We also offer support for medication adherence and counseling. All treatments are personalized – for example, we select antiretrovirals based on any drug resistance or side effects. By controlling the virus effectively, we keep the immune system strong and prevent progression to AIDS.
