Understanding Mucormycosis
Mucormycosis is a rare but serious fungal infection caused by molds (Mucorales) found in the environment. It often affects people with weakened immune systems – for example, uncontrolled diabetes or other immune-suppressing conditions.
Mucormycosis can involve the sinuses, lungs, skin or digestive tract, and progresses rapidly. Early signs can be misleading, but a classic feature is tissue necrosis (blackened tissue) as the fungus invades blood vessels. Without prompt treatment, it can spread and become life-threatening.
When To See a Doctor
You should consult a doctor if you experience symptoms any of:
Facial or sinus symptomsFever, one-sided facial pain or swelling, headache, nasal congestion or bloody discharge, and blackish lesions on the nasal bridge or mouth.
-
Respiratory symptoms Persistent fever with cough, chest pain or shortness of breath (pulmonary involvement).

Skin and wound symptomsRedness, warmth or swelling around a wound, especially if blisters or ulcers appear and the area turns black.
-
Gastrointestinal symptoms Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or gastrointestinal bleeding (if the stomach/intestines are involved).

Treatment At Shlok Infectious Diseases Clinic
At Shlok Clinic, we use advanced diagnostics and targeted antifungal therapy to fight mucormycosis. We collaborate with modern labs for fungal cultures and PCR tests, and obtain imaging (CT/MRI) to determine the extent of infection. Treatment follows CDC recommendations: high-dose antifungal drugs (such as amphotericin B, posaconazole or isavuconazole) combined with surgical removal of infected tissue when needed.
Dr. Mitesh Suthar and the team tailor each plan to the patient’s condition and monitors response closely. We also manage underlying risk factors (like uncontrolled diabetes) to prevent spread. Strict infection-control practices in our clinic ensure that hospital-related fungal outbreaks are minimized.
